Ward 8 exists near some of our nation’s most outstanding health institutions. But despite this proximity to internationally recognize health care too many of our community residents lack health insurance or programs to insure good individual health habits. The city of Cleveland can be a major partner to our neighborhoods in providing information and services to increase knowledge and change bad health decisions by its citizens. Through non-profit organizations, Cleveland city clinics, and the larger health institutions we can do more to improve our residents’ health. Obesity is on the increase, high blood pressure rates continue to exist, and diabetes and other health problems predominate.
Additionally, AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases, and child obesity are on the rise among our youth. These health problems are not given enough serious and focused attention by our leaders or others in our community. The neighborhood institutions, including the faith community, must re-commit and face the truth of the health crisis among our youth. The reality is that our youth are participating in repeated sexual activity, and in addition to it causing teen pregnancy, they are also in danger of significantly risking their future by making poor health-related choices now.
Local leadership working with state and national leaders, and institutions, can bring resources, services and programs to city residents to assist in the fight for better health options, and guard against dangerous health risks. It only takes hard work, commitment and a willingness to face the truth to bring about the desired health results.
